Nowadays, aesthetics play a very important role in all dental treatments aimed at maintaining and restoring the health of the teeth, however, there are treatments that are specifically aimed at creating a harmonious, perfect smile. These so-called aesthetic dental treatments can be used to correct problems that are not a major health problem, such as too large gaps between the teeth, minor shape differences or discoloration of the teeth.
Aesthetic dental veneer (veneer) is a breath-thin, tooth-colored veneer that, when glued to the anterior surface of a tooth, allows for optical correction of shape defects and discolorations, enamel defects, and the removal of gaps between the teeth. The great advantage of a tooth crown is that only one side of a given tooth has to be prepared for gluing, which involves little loss of tooth material, there is no need to grind the entire tooth. The downside is that it is not applicable to some tooth and bite problems and is more vulnerable than a crown: it can bounce or crack more easily due to mechanical effects or heat, so wearing it requires some awareness.
There are two types of dental shells: the direct shell and the indirect shell.
The direct shell, or other shell of the so-called composite shell, is prepared in one session at the office, along with its preliminary preparation. The shell is formed by the dentist himself by layering a composite material that binds light to the mouth without the involvement of a dental technician, so this solution is not only cheaper in time but also in price than the porcelain shell. The disadvantage is that it wears out and loses its shine during use, so it needs to be polished regularly or discolored more easily.
The indirect shell, also known as the ceramic or porcelain shell, is made in a dental laboratory after a doctor's preparation and impression with minimal tooth loss, resulting in more time and cost for the patient than a direct shell. Its advantage, however, is that it is much more durable and durable than that, it does not lose its shine, it provides an extremely aesthetic appearance in the long run and perfectly restores the appearance of natural tooth enamel.
Before making the dental skin, a condition assessment and smile planning are required, after which the main steps for an indirect skin are:
The treatment is completed by polishing or oral care advice.
In many cases, the color of the teeth is not dazzlingly white, but – depending on the genetic conditions and the diet and lifestyle – it can be bone-colored or even quite yellow or yellowish-brown. all without damaging the tooth enamel. Teeth whitening is a popular aesthetic dental treatment in itself, but it is often used before gluing dental veneers, more precisely when choosing their color, to make the end result even more beautiful.
Aesthetic dental treatments help patients whose teeth are fundamentally healthy but still unhappy with their smile for some reason. Discolorations can be made more aesthetic by, for example, teeth whitening, discolorations that do not respond well to teeth whitening, and enamel defects, abnormalities or gaps between teeth through direct or indirect dental veneers.
Dental treatments for aesthetic purposes should not be performed on all patients. Teeth whitening should be avoided in pregnant or lactating women and in periodontal disease and hypersensitive teeth, but for practical reasons it is not advisable to use it even if one of the front teeth has already undergone restorative dental treatment (eg filling, crown, as their color cannot be changed). Dental veneers also require an intact foundation, i.e., they cannot be placed on teeth with large fillings that have undergone root canal treatment, but are not recommended even with known gnashing of teeth or certain bite disorders.
The durability of dental veneers depends largely on the type of epithelium and the patient’s attention. In general, direct composite shells are less durable, wear over time, have an average lifespan of 3-5 years, while ceramic / porcelain shells can last up to 10-15 years with proper care.
Before applying the dental shell, it is necessary to prepare the anterior surface of the tooth to be covered, which involves sanding off a small portion of the enamel. In the case of more sensitive teeth, this could normally cause pain, so it is performed under local anesthesia and without pain.
